Hydrostatic Pressure Testing of Fire Extinguisher | Health and Safety
We are going discuss hydrostatic test of stored pressure
type fire extinguisher what you're going to see full hydrostatic test here, we
wanted to give you guys a little bit of idea on how that works whether you are
a fire equipment distributor or an end-user.
First, you need to take the
extinguisher apart, then get the top off and then go ahead and clean off the tube
then clean out the head of the extinguisher you can see there's a lot of
foreign matter and dust particles and things inside, blow all that out, run a nylon
brush through and then check that valve stem and the spring and make sure that
everything is in good working condition. remember that the only difference
between six-year care down and the hydrostatic test is simply that you need to
fill that shelf full of water you need to pressurize it to three times its
operating pressure and a hydrostatic test you need to record all that as
opposed is just doing an internal examination and external examination of the
extinguisher, make sure that there's nothing inside there as that valve stem
goes inside of his head you can see it's very clean after you worked it over you
want that bounce them to heat inside there perfectly, put a little bit of a
lube on that valve stem, put that all back together and set that to the side
and empty that extinguisher out.
Next, remember that you should only deal with doing an
internal examination or a hydrostatic test on a fire extinguisher if you are certified
inspector and have been trained to do so. we're going to move into the hydrostatic
testing, hereafter you get that emptied out as you can see there’s usually a lot of dust leftover check the inside of that cylinder, make sure there's no
dents, rust any caked in dry chemical ABC here it moved on and you filling up
the fire extinguisher with water, go ahead and top it off with water before,
actually put it into the hydrostatic testing hand pump when you do so you're going
to be pumping that to three times the operating pressure as printed on the shell
as you can see there is a hand pump provided on equipment, now put that quick the coupler on top of that fire extinguisher and top it off with water and then test
it to three times the operating pressure you have to let that hold for one
minute and it has to hold within 1% of the total test pressure here you invert
the fire extinguisher to get rid of that water taking off the test plug and now
you are going to go ahead and you are going to take down all the information, check
the shell diameter and go check the height and record the information the height,
the diameter.
You can add the test pressure and every day that machine has to be
tested to do specifications to make sure that gauges are all calibrated and in
good working condition after that make the cylinder dry fill the extinguisher within
a tenth of ten pounds of ABC dry chemical after you get done, go ahead and put
this extinguisher back together you know run a brush around to make sure that
when you get that head back on it get a good old ring seal and that O-ring on
that head it's should be lubed up good and right here you can also see it's got
a service collar this is going to provide sufficient evidence that there has
been a service done on that fire extinguisher places it in the clamp here and put
a recharging adapter in hook dry nitrogen up to that, recharge adapter opening it
up and then going to go ahead pressurizes to 195 psi or whatever the psi is on
that specific fire extinguisher. many different fire extinguishers are
pressurized 100 psi or 200 and above depending on the type and last but not
least you need to wipe it down make sure that it's in really good condition, get
the hose cleaned off and you can apply a little bit of lube around there and
then you can see due to some of the contents that would keep all the different parts
of materials and finish it off by cleaning the house and then attach that hose
back to that fire extinguisher again we appreciate everybody that takes time to
view these article one of the last things that you are doing here is in
addition to that service collar, throw on a hydrostatic test tag and punch the
test pressure you're going to punch the date and the month in and go ahead and make your sign that after you are done with this fire extinguisher hydrostatic test.
